“I need to talk to my partner.” Here's what I say.
Most closers either push or give up. Both lose the deal. Instead, rehearse the conversation with them, so the real objection is on the table today.
Never imply they don't need their partner's opinion. You're on their side, helping them have a good conversation at home.
- Step 1
Validate
“100%, that's smart. Can I ask you something?”
- Why it works
- You agree that it's a joint decision. Resistance drops, and they're open to your question.
- Step 2
Rehearse
“When you tell them about this, what do you think they'll say?”
- Why it works
- They voice the partner's objection, which is usually their own hidden doubt.
- Listen for
- Money (“can we afford it?”), trust (“is this legit?”), or time.
- Step 3
Let them answer it
“Okay. And what will you tell them?”
- Why it works
- Now they're selling it to themselves first. If they can answer it, they're ready. If they can't, you know exactly what to handle.
- Step 4
Bring the partner in
“Would it help if we took 15 minutes together, the three of us, so they can ask me anything directly?”
- When
- If the doubt is real and they can't answer it alone.
- Why it works
- The partner hears it first-hand instead of a second-hand summary. Book it before you hang up.
