Same words. Different tone. Different deal.
Your prospect reads the intention behind your question before they process the words. The wrong tone triggers sales resistance. The right tone lowers it. Here are the 5 tones and when to use each one.
Over-excited, fast or monotone triggers the “salesperson” alarm. Calm, curious and slower sounds like an expert.
- Tone 1
Curious
“So… what's your biggest challenge right now?”
- When
- Opening and situation questions.
- How
- Slightly raised pitch at the end, relaxed pace, genuine interest.
- Tone 2
Confused
“Stressed…?”
- When
- When they use an emotional word: stress, frustrated, stuck.
- How
- Repeat their word with a small frown and a pause. They'll explain it, deeper.
- Tone 3
Challenging
“What happens if you keep getting these leads…”
- When
- Later in the call, at the start of consequence questions.
- How
- A little faster and firmer. It creates tension and makes them justify change.
- Tone 4
Concerned
“…how do you scale the company at that point?”
- When
- End of consequence questions, uncovering hidden objections, “off the record” questions.
- How
- Slower, quieter, softer. Lean in, hand on chest if it helps. It signals you care about the outcome.
- Tone 5
Playful
“Does your co-founder know you're on this call, or is this a secret mission?”
- When
- Breaking tension, late arrivals, typical objections.
- How
- A light laugh in the voice. It takes the pressure out of the room.
- Tone 6
Practice drill
Your face is the remote control for your voice.
- Do this
- Say the same question 5 times, once per tone, and change only your facial expression. Record it and listen back.
- Check
- If all 5 sound the same, exaggerate the face more. The voice follows.
